Barney
moved to the big city of Lincoln, Nebraska's state capital, after high
school. There he embarked on a series of nearly 20 different jobs, from
circus laborer to theatre usher, to newspaper stringer. Little by little,
he earned enough to begin a few classes at the University of Nebraska.
Barney told his parents he was off to school: |
|
"I
can still see the stricken looks on the faces of my mother and father
that night when I told them I was 'going to college'. They were distressed
because they had to tell me that they couldn't help me financially;
that
I would have to work my way through school. That was fine with me-all
I wanted was their approval." |

In
between jobs, Barney managed to attend a few classes at the university.
He majored in journalism and minored in military science. |
