Barney Moves to Lincoln

Barney (eighth from left) moved to the brand new Stuart Theater in June 1929 for its grand opening.

Barney moved to the big city of Lincoln, Nebraska's state capital, after high school. There he embarked on a series of nearly 20 different jobs, from circus laborer to theatre usher, to newspaper stringer. Little by little, he earned enough to begin a few classes at the University of Nebraska. Barney told his parents he was off to school:
"I can still see the stricken looks on the faces of my mother and father that night when I told them I was 'going to college'. They were distressed because they had to tell me that they couldn't help me financially; that I would have to work my way through school. That was fine with me-all I wanted was their approval."
In between jobs, Barney managed to attend a few classes at the university. He majored in journalism and minored in military science.
