Barney's NEXT Assignment
April 26, 2003; 1:19am
Today, in Los Angeles, California, a dear friend and inspiration to many, moved on to his next assignment.
After a relatively short hospital stay, Colonel Barney Oldfield passed away from natural causes. He was 93.
During his final days in the hospital, he continued to make friends. The hospital staff that crossed his path, received copies of his book, The Kid from Tecumseh. There was no doubt that they were dealing with a witty, good-hearted, classy character. They said he never complained and the warmth in their eyes as they spoke of him and to him, said volumes.
Many of his friends in Los Angeles visited and those who were out of town, sent good wishes. Two friends were daily visitors, Todd Nelson and Ruth Schiller.
Todd, in one of his many email updates to Barney's friends said,

"Barney's plan, of course, is to rest next to Vada at the military cemetery in North Platte, NE. He wouldn't want us to mourn him, but to celebrate his full, rich life and get to work continuing his good deeds. The world is a far, far better place because this man walked upon it. My life, and all of ours, are infinitely better because we are his friends."
Anyone who had the chance to meet Barney I'm sure would agree with Todd. For those of you who never had the pleasure, we want you to know that if you take a moment to absorb even a fraction of this website, you will have a rare opportunity to meet a truly inspirational human-being.
This website will continue the good works of Colonel Barney and Vada Kinman-Oldfield. If any of you wish to attend ceremonies for this incredible man, please contact Nebraska Coast Connection or check this website for announcements.
We all wish Barney well on his new assignment and hope that he gives his beloved Vada a hug from us all. He remains well-loved.
