Uncle Sam came calling for Barney on November 25, 1940, for a one-year stint in the Army.

Barney was assigned to First Batallion, Third Infantry, as commander of B Company. Five weeks later he was ordered to the Seventh Corps. Area Headquarters and served in the G-2 section where public relations was then practiced.
