Barney
was not the only Oldfield to serve the country. Vada joined the Women's
Auxiliary Army Corps (WAAC), later the Women's Army Corps (WAC). Vada
was so petite - standing at five feet, one inch tall and weighing a
little over 100 pounds - she needed a waiver to enlist. |

"
When I attempted to surprise (Barney) by joining the WAC, someone was
posting a magazine spread on the bulletin board with his story in it
entitled, 'My Wife's A WAC'". The WAC boss had asked him to
do it on behalf of recruiting. About the time I was seeing (the article),
so was an old companion in a Walla Walla, Washington barbershop.
'Hey,'
he said to the startled barber, 'I know the guy who wrote this. I
know him so well, I'll bet he talked his wife into joining up just
so that
he could write this story.' He knew my husband pretty well." |
