The Oldfield's participation in WWII has had a long-lasting effect on their lives. Barney has written three books, all of which deal with WWII in some form or another.
Barney's first book, Never A Shot In Anger, was published in 1956 and later reissued in 1989. It detailed the story of the 1,828 war correspondents who covered World War II and how the Army accommodated the press and performed its media operations. This book has been a reference source for over 47 books on WWII.
