Colonel
Barney Oldfield, USAF (Ret), with Litton Industries, introduced Academician
Arbatov to Tex Thorton, and when Tex was the FIRST "official guest
of the USSR" under auspices of the Academy of Sciences, the first
hosted by Arbatov's newly established Institute of Studies of the USA,
July-August, 1969, Barney was Thorton's escort for the initial slight
opening to the west--and took this picture in Leningrad. Their interpreter
was Inna Sheidina, whose father was the Shedin Arbatov mentions here
as a revered friend. When Tex took a photo of Barney with Inna, he put
his arm around her shoulder. "Will it embarrass you to be photographed
in the arms of an American capitalist?" Barney asked her and she
said: "No, I'll keep it in my desk drawer" and she did. |
