Barney served in Korea until October 1950, then was brought back to Washington. Lt. Gen. Norstad, assigned to Europe as Commander in Chief of the United States Air Force-Europe (USAFE) and a part of Supreme Headquarters Allied Powers-Europe (SHAPE), wanted Barney to accompany him as his chief of information.
